BEFORE THE INTERVIEW:

 Review & update your resume.

Identify critical skills by reviewing past accomplishments.

Know what you’re looking for.

Preferred work, location, employer size, benefits.

Practice interviewing.

Rehearse anticipated questions in order to communicate freely.

Find out who you will be interviewing with and their titles.

Check to see what happens after the interview. [i.e. Drug test, reference’s, personality test, second interview] Ask your recruiter to find out for you.

Prepare for tough questions: What are your weaknesses? Why should we hire you?

Dress professionally, be well groomed and well mannered, the first impression is the one that counts.

Make extra copies of your resume and bring to interview.

Make a list of questions to ask during the interview.

Arrive early to allow time to compose yourself.

Avoid using negatives.

Never say you left a job because you didn’t like the boss.

Many companies now give employment tests, personality, or stress tests. It is best to be prepared for any of these tests in advance. But if you are given one unexpectedly, stay calm and relax. Your tension will show up in the test.

DURING THE INTERVIEW:

Give the interviewer a firm handshake.

Don’t eat, smoke or drink anything – even if offered.

Take an active role in the interview. Answer & ask questions.

Speak Clearly. Do not mumble your words. It portrays a lack of confidence.

Listen before you answer questions. Make sure you have understood the question. If you do not, ask him to clarify it. Take a second, then answer.

Stress skills & experience that match openings

Maintain eye contact at all times.

You are confident about yourself and your capabilities. Relay that. Do not stare out of the window or fiddle with your pencil. The interviewer is talking to you or you to him. Be attentive.

Don’t be afraid to take notes. (Remember key points)

esist temptation to discuss salary. OK to ask “What’s the salary range for the position?”

Ask questions. (Refer to list)

Be ready to ask for the job. Ask how many applicants are being considered, and when and how you’ll hear from the employer next.

Thank the interviewer for the meeting.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW:

Review your performance. What went well & why? What should you modify?
